First-born Mei was adopted by an American mother and British father when her Chinese family gave her away, and she spends a contended upbringing in the UK.  Out of the blue, Mei is contacted by her birth mother, who asks for help.

A brother she has never known is fighting for his life, spurring the young woman to return to her native country.  Once there, Mei becomes entangled in a complicated world but continues to persevere through her ongoing family and personal struggles.
